Kurt Gray

Psychology & Neuroscience Professor

Dr. Kurt Gray is a Professor in Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a social psychologist who explores moral judgments and how best to understand and bridge political divides. Many Americans disagree about morality and politics. People are polarized about what's right and what's wrong. Dr. Gray argues that we all have the same moral mind and it revolves around harm. His research shows that no matter our politics or culture, our moral sense is all the same. He says moral disagreement happens when one person's perpetrator is another person's victim. He says almost every hot button moral debate is driven by a disagreement about who is doing the harm and who is being harmed. Dr. Gray directs the Deepest Beliefs Lab and the Center for the Science of Moral Understanding. Dr. Gray received his PhD from Harvard University.

He teaches the popular course, "The Science of Moral Understanding," which gives students the knowledge and skills to engage with others across moral differences. Gray has published more than 120 journal articles. He has a book coming out in a few months entitled, "Outraged: Why We Fight About Morality and Politics."

Dr. Gray focuses on how people's core beliefs, including morality and religion, impact society and he investigates the increasing presence of artificial intelligence in society. Dr. Gray's lab research also reveals how people respond to bias in algorithms.
