Carrie Masters
Homelessness Expert/Nonprofit CEO
Carrie Masters is the CEO of St. Joseph the Worker (SJW), a nonprofit in Phoenix dedicated to helping homeless, low-income and disadvantaged individuals achieve self-sufficiency through employment. Appointed in early 2023, Carrie is the first female CEO in SJW's 35-year history. Carrie grew up homeless, herself, with her father in prison. She says she lived in shelters, abandoned homes and cars. This program aims to help people become self sufficient without the need for government assistance.
St. Joseph the Worker operates 30-day transitional housing where women live after they exit prison. They're provided with a place to stay, meals and work outfits for the job interview process. Once the women have jobs, they move to a 90-day facility which allows them to save up for first & last month's rent and application fees.
Before SJW, Carrie spent 20 years at LGE Design Build, rising from receptionist to Chief Operating Officer. She also served as the executive director of the David R. Sellers Foundation and helped launch both Creation RE/PE and LGE Design Group, where she served as COO.
In 2022, Carrie left LGE to focus on finding her life’s purpose. After a period of self-reflection, she joined SJW, driven by a desire to combine her professional experience with her firsthand experiences growing up in poverty and homelessness in Arizona. Under her leadership, SJW continues to grow and impact the community significantly. Carrie is passionate about SJW's mission, which resonates personally with her experience of growing up in poverty and homelessness in Arizona. She is committed to leveraging her professional expertise and personal ethos to lead SJW into a future of growth and expanded community impact.
Carrie holds a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and a Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from Texas Christian University, as well as a master's degree in business administration. Recognized by the Phoenix Business Journal as a 40 Under 40 honoree in 2020, Carrie is dedicated to community service and has served on numerous nonprofit boards.
